Thank you to all the parents, students snd staff. This morning was a huge success with Covid testing at SISSON. Those who pre-registered made it so much easier, quicker for all of us. If you don’t pre-register it’s OK. We will continue to test as needed but testing in the mornings from 8-10. If you have any questions please call the office at 926.3846. Thank you.

Pre-Register for your Rapid Covid testing tomorrow, Wednesday, September 8, 2021. We partnered with the California Department of Public Health to offer COVID-19 testing. This testing is through Primary.Health and will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, September 8, 2021. To get started, please pre-register for testing by clicking this link: https://my.primary.health/l/mtshasta. You only need to register once and each time you test, it will take no longer than 15 minutes. We will have you drive through our "staff" parking lot and pull up in front of the side doors. You can also park along Rockfellow. We will be having 2 people administering tests. Please be patient and pre-register, it will help us out tremendously. Thanks for your patience, in advance and remember we are all in this together. Thanks again, Holly Castaneda

7A Quarantine… I just wanted to clarify some confusion regarding 7A Mrs. Anderson’s class under quarantine. Mrs. Anderson‘s class is the ONLY 7th grade class that is under quarantine. 7A students can return to school on Monday, September 13. SISSON will contact parents regarding a short term independent study packet that will be ready for pick up tomorrow, September 7. Students that have been vaccinated need to bring their vaccination card to Holly at the Sisson office before they can attend class, tomorrow, September 7. Students that are symptom-free and interested in receiving a Covid test, can test six days after the infected person started having symptoms and returned on the 8th day, Friday, September 10. Otherwise everybody will return on Monday, September 13. Mr. Schmidt’s class will return to school tomorrow, Tuesday, September 7, like normal. Please contact Holly at the SISSON office if you have any questions.

We remain on track to open for full in-person learning with the continuing option for distance learning on Monday, March 8. The board has hired additional staff members to keep our class sizes small enough to meet the state guidelines regarding physical distancing. All students will eat their snack and lunch outdoors whenever the weather permits. Be sure to send your child with a jacket because we’ll be eating outside if at all possible. The state public health guidelines recommend students eat in classrooms if they are unable to eat outside. We expect to be able to eat outside at least 95% of the time. On days when it is simply too stormy or cold to eat outside, students will eat in the classrooms, and each classroom will be able to move volunteer students onto chairs in the hallway outside the class so the space between students while eating can be maximized. Other schools that do this report that students are excited to be the ones to volunteer to eat in the hallways. Parents may choose to sign their children out during lunch, especially on extremely stormy or cold days, if they do not want their children eating in the classroom. If you choose this option, please return your child to school in time for afternoon classes. We ventilate our classrooms with a combination of open windows, fans, and air purifiers. When deployed in classrooms, fans push air out the windows and do not blow air across anyone’s face. Per state public health guidelines, we continue to limit sharing of items and materials to the extent practicable. If items must be shared, they’re used by one classroom group at a time and are disinfected between uses.

This is an update regarding the latest quarantine protocols from the department of public health. Vaccinated persons with an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria: 1. Are fully vaccinated (i.e., ≥2 weeks following receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose series, or ≥2 weeks following receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine) 2. Are within 3 months following receipt of the last dose in the series 3. Have remained asymptomatic since the current COVID-19 exposure Fully vaccinated persons who do not quarantine should still watch for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days following an exposure. If they experience symptoms, they should be clinically evaluated for COVID-19, including SARS-CoV-2 testing, if indicated. In addition, they should respond to calls or texts from their local health department and engage in contact tracing efforts if requested to do so. Persons who do not meet all 3 of the above criteria should continue to follow current CDPH quarantine guidance after exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. That guidance is written below for your convenience: All asymptomatic close contacts (within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period) may discontinue quarantine after Day 10 from the date of last exposure with or without testing.

The Mount Shasta Union School District received complaints against two teachers on January 7, 2021, alleging sharing of personal political viewpoints during classroom instruction. We implemented District investigative measures and have since incorporated applicable policies and procedures. Both teachers are aware of how the classroom discussions have been perceived and impacted others. As a District, we will continue to take steps that help ensure all staff adhere to district policies. This includes appropriately providing instruction on controversial issues, such as the events that took place in our nation’s capital on January 6, 2021. Moving forward, we will also continue to work with our parents, staff and students to provide a positive learning environment. We are committed to ensuring the District is a safe place where a high level of respect and care is given to all employees and students.

Because we've been operating largely in distance learning, there was no close contact between this person and students or their families. At noon today, the governor held a press conference announcing stricter regional stay-at-home orders that will be triggered if intensive care unit capacity in a region falls below 15%.  He divided the state into five regions, one of which is northern California.  They're saying our region is going to have less than 15% ICU capacity within just a few days. It is not the interest of the state to impact what is already going on with schools, and our capitol watchers are confirming that schools can continue to do what we're already doing.  They are working on getting this all in writing. MSUSD will be able to continue to operate our modified learning hub model that we are currently running, so today's announcement doesn't change anything for us, even as our region is moving into having less than 15% ICU capacity. Please reach out to your school's principal or your student's teacher if you have any questions, and continue to abide by best practices to keep you and your loved ones safe during this time.

This morning we confirmed there has been a positive COVID test of a member of our school community. School Nurse Patty reports that it has been determined that there was no close contact between this person and the school staff, students, or families. Please remember to continue to monitor yourself and your family for symptoms and take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, and maintaining a physical distance from those outside your household.

The district will follow state guidelines for schools within counties that are in the purple category by bringing limited voluntary in-person learning hubs back beginning on Monday, November 30. Currently we will target special education students, Title I students, English learners, and Sisson Bridges students for possible in-person learning opportunities. Specialist teachers will make contact with families of these students to discuss scheduling and next steps.

This message is an update about when we will revisit returning to our hybrid learning model. Today, the state moved Siskiyou County into the most restrictive purple (or widespread) COVID tier. As a result, we must continue with the distance-learning-only model into December, and the board will revisit our reopening status at its board meeting on Monday, December 14. We continue to encourage those in our community to practice physical distancing, limit travel where possible, wash hands frequently, and wear masks when around people not in your household.

In response to a positive COVID-19 test at the Boys & Girls Club and with the safety of our students and staff in mind, we are sad to have to announce we are moving to distance learning again. This has been a difficult decision that is based on the rise in new COVID-19 cases in Siskiyou County over the last ten days. As of today, Monday Nov. 9th, we have 314 confirmed cases, 51 of which are active. Shasta County to the south of us and Jackson County to the north of us have had even greater spikes in new cases. To help prevent a similar large spike in cases in our community, we are closing both of our campuses to in-person learning through the end of Thanksgiving vacation (November 27). All students will participate in daily live interaction with their teachers in full distance learning mode. Your child’s teacher will contact you with specific details about what to expect for the next two weeks before Thanksgiving vacation. We remain committed to the health and safety of our students, staff, and all their families.

During the September 22 board meeting, the board voted to move to Step 3 of our 4-step reopening plan on October 12. This means that on October 12, we will pivot to hybrid schedules with all students participating in a mixture of face-to-face, on-campus instruction and distance learning. Families will also have the option to continue participating solely in distance learning with no face-to-face, on-campus instruction. We will continue to communicate information to our families about the details of this move, but we wanted to get this initial information out to families so you can set the date on your calendars. We know that you need a wealth of information as soon as possible to plan effectively on your end, and we are working hard to provide it. The superintendent has met on multiple occasions with staff members, union leaders, parent leaders elected to the schools' site councils (in addition to those who volunteered to be part of the conversation), and once with the school board. Today, the governor made some significant announcements about reopening schools that we are taking into consideration. The superintendent will present a one-page phased opening matrix to the board for approval this coming Tuesday evening, July 21, at the board meeting starting at 7:00 p.m. You can expect to begin seeing regular updates through these channels as the August 24 start date approaches. One last post for today - We are excited to share information about a new way of thinking about the school experience that our teachers are embracing for next year. It's called the flipped classroom, and we feel it fits perfectly into a distance learning or blended learning model. The video at this link will give you more information about this concept. This week we celebrate our classified employees and their vital contribution to student learning and well being. We have classified members who are feeding our students, cleaning and sanitizing our schools to keep our staff safe, keeping vital office and library services going, delivering meals and learning packets, and assisting our teachers with lesson preparation and student contact during distance learning. We are grateful and celebrate the efforts of our classified employees!

At last night's board meeting (5/13/2020), the trustees adopted the following grading policy, which differs slightly from the first reading a month ago. If you have any questions, please check with your child's teacher or your school's principal. The policy is pasted here for your convenience: Grade TK-3 teachers will continue their report cards as best as they can given the limitations with distance learning. Grade 4-5 teachers will use credit, no credit, and credit + in recording student grades. Grade 6-8 teachers will continue using A-F while taking into account the special circumstances and effects of the COVID-19 virus on student progress.

Earlier this month, the school board had its first reading regarding the grading policies of the district in the context of our distance learning model. In line with guidance from the California Department of Education, students’ grades can only go up from where they were when we switched to distance learning; the grades cannot go down. For questions regarding your child’s specific grade level and grading, please reach out to your child’s teacher or principal.
